Excel: That annoying paintbrush button (a.k.a. "Insert Options")

Someone asked me how to get rid of the "Insert Options" button. Here's what he was getting; I've highlighted the button in this image:
You get this when you insert a row. Excel is asking what formatting you want for your new row (you can choose to copy formatting from the row above or the row below). Even when you make a choice, however, the button stays on screen, forever obscuring nearby data (you can click in another cell and the buttons stays there -- to get rid of it you have to actually edit a cell).

So, here's how to get rid of it:
  1. In the Tools menu, choose Options.
  2. Select the Edit tab.
  3. Un-check the box next to "Show Insert Options buttons".
That's it -- you're free of the Insert Options buttoon forever (until you re-install Excel).

Comments:
Thank you so much. You have just increased both the quality and the duration of my expected lifetime.

lol i agree with him, that thing was so damn annoying

Ditto, ditto, for years. Just found this by searching the web for "Excel annoying paintbrush". I'm using Excel 2007; in this version you
1. click the "Microsoft" button (top left)
2. choose Excel Options
3. choose Advanced
4. scroll down to Cut, Copy, and Paste
5. uncheck "show paste options"
6. click OK

That paintbrush is not a good user experience! I don't understand why they don't make it disappear once you've made a choice. Thank you for sharing your solution for turning it off!

Thanks for that fix - the buttons were maddening.

For Excel 2011 (Mac) it's preferences / edit and then unclick "show paste options smart buttons" and "show insert options smart buttons"

My lifespan also extended!
